Comments
Comments: Kearsarge North, unmaintained trail, Bartlett Mountain, Mt Surprise, spur to Mt Surprise Road, roadwalk

Microspikes were sufficient today. We barebooted quite a ways up, but planned to wear spikes for most of the descent. Instead, we took the connecting “trail” to Bartlett Mountain and descended through Merriman State Forest and the Mount Surprise Preserve. We removed our spikes just after Bartlett Mountain as the ice was much less here. Unfortunately, there was A TON of slippery leaves covering slippery roots and small rolling rocks. The trail was beautiful and varied terrain, so we didn’t regret taking it even though the conditions made it slow. Up on the summit of Kearsarge, the snow was quite deep and there were lots of drifts. If you plan to take advantage of the toilet, be prepared to wade through some deep snow.
