Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked down the road adjacent to the railroad track in the large plowed parking lot. There is no official parking at the trailhead and its an active gravel pit. Not my idea of a good place to park and the road adjacent to the cemetery is too narrow (parking there would block homeowners).

Comments
Comments: Its been awhile since I visited this remnant of a historic trail (It long ago went from Gorham all the way to top of Madison and was considered as a possible route of the AT long ago)

The trailhead has become even more hard to find with the gravel put in active use. Head to the end of Promenade street past the cemetery past the green gateposts. Walk straight past piles of wood and look for a USFS trailhead sign nestled next to pile of old pavement. Look to the left into the woods (not the road going uphill). There are no recent blazes, the path runs through the woods until it comes out on cleared right of way, there is trail sign. Now walk right along the right of way about a 100 yards and look to sign and woods road going into the woods. Follow the main road ignoring turns to the right. Keep an eye out for trail sign that turns off the trail.Note this lower areas is a major snowmachine route later in winter. From there the trail bed is pretty obvious until after breaking out on a narrow ridge than flattening out. The trail is marked on occasion with faded blazes, newer spot blazes and yellow ribbons. Once across the flats its better marked.

Note I did not go all the way to the summit. In the winter its a lot quicker to just take a right at the Yurts and walk a short distance to the camp road and dining hall, then take the obvious left into the woods where the other Pien Mtn trail quickly joins the road. Going straight on the trail past the Yurts just take a meander in the woods to avoid camp operations in the summer.

I used microspikes as there is lot of ice under the light layer of snow. Snow depth varied from 1" at the traihead to maybe 4" near the top.
