Took Mt. Major trail up the majority of the way. Then a shortcut down finishing off on Boulder trail for the last half mile or so. Up to 2 in of snow accumulations generally, more on the way. No views due to clouds. Didn't use microspikes on the way up although wouldn't have hurt to have them at the steeper areas, I slipped once or twice. Started with microspikes on the way down but the snow was so wet it got packed up on the microspikes and I got so frustrated I took them off. There is some ice and mud under areas of the snow so use caution and the slippery wet snow adds to the fun too.
On a separate note from the trail conditions- I discovered someone had drawn a 3ft swastika in the snow at the bottom of the Boulder trail between the two bridges near the parking lot. Assuming this was done to be intentionally offensive. Pretty alarming. I brushed it away with my boots so no one else had to be offended by it. Needless to say I reported it to the Alton Police department. Something like this is not something I've come to expect from the NH hiking community. |
