Late afternoon hike to grab this 500 highest peak. 8.5 miles of breaking trail in snow ranging from 2” at the start and about 6-7” at the summit. Snow was crunchy on top and soft under the entire way making it a pretty good slog for the hip flexors. Lots of wildlife tracks along Five Summers trail including Moose, Bear, Coyote and Snowshoe Hare. Very fresh bear tracks that passed right under the summit jar. They were so fresh that I signed in and headed right back the way I came. I was fortunate to pass through a beautiful glade of silver birches (many were likely the largest I’ve ever seen of this variety), after leaving Five Summers trail to whack to the summit. |
