A great day by December standards. Went clockwise to have the wind at our backs, which turned out to be a good choice. The entire loop has been broken out very well and in 95% of spots is a firm snowshoe track in great condition. The summit cone of Lafayette is covered in rime and frozen snow, but traction was good with the Hillsounds. We wore spikes start to finish with no trouble or post holes. There are a few deep drfts on the ridge but the wind has compacted them into mostly stable rime/granular. Not really any ice to speak of. For today, traction did the job well but a few people had snowshoes. Either will work until conditions change. |
