Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All very easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are two fresh blowdowns near the very beginning (almost in sight of the road). One is significant. There is a path forming around it, but it probably should be addressed in the spring.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Ours was the only one on the trail today. She seemed to like it. I guess it smelled nice.
Bugs
Bugs: At one point my wife said “I’m following a f*cking mosquito.” She was not referring to me.

Comments
Comments: While it’s possible to bareboot the lower portions, I highly recommend snowshoes for the mile at the very least. The snow was less consolidated higher up and people were postholing. I nearly twisted an ankle at one point when my snowshoe went into someone’s posthole.

We weren’t expecting the view to be good today after we drove through some fog and clouds on the way to the trailhead, but we ended up hitting it just at the right time. The late afternoon light was the kind photographers dream about and pockets of clouds in the distant valleys of the Sandwich Range gave the whole scene an ethereal quality.
