Comments
Comments: We wore spikes car to car. The trail is well packed, but pretty lumpy (didn’t look like snowshoes had been used in a while on Signal Ridge). We set off at 8:30 and made quick work of the two mile roadwalk and the beginning of Signal Ridge. Everything was nicely frozen. We took the rerouted trail on the way up even though it hadn’t been packed out. The water crossing was pretty easily hopped. By 10:30, it was noticeably warmer. Down low, the trees were bare of snow, but above Signal Ridge we were rained on as the ice began melting incredibly fast. Summit fire tower was encrusted in ~.75” of ice. Temp on the summit was 33°, wind topped out at 49 mph. On the descent, we took the old trail (which was the way that had been broken out well). The water crossing required using slightly submerged rocks. Temperature was 51° and the trail was quite slushy. Carried snowshoes, but didn’t need them. If it continues to be this warm, you might need them up high.
