Turned out to be a wet, wet, wet day!!!! Wore full goretex and eventually soaked everything to the skin and the soles of my feet!!!! Still, a fine day for this hike in complete solitude. Drizzled and was about 30F all day.
Followed indistinct snowshoe tracks to the Gordon Pond Jct and then there was about 4-6" of slushy snow up to Mt Wolf. Did the little bushwhack to actual summit - easy to find. Passed a few areas of very fresh bear tracks - they crossed the trail - must be up and about looking for food?
Decided to descend on the Dilly Trail - sign at top says, "Difficult" - I figured how bad could it be? I prepared to butt-slide down but it was a bit too bony. One of the steepest trails I've been on in recent memory!!!! 600+' down in 3/4 mi is FUN!!!! Footing was OK but it took me a while. Saw some unusual ice formations - a special treat!
At the bottom, at Lost River, there were signs the trail was closed and the reservation said "No Tresspassing" - top of the trail was not marked that way, tho!!! |
