Comments
Comments: A FINE day in the forest was had. NO SPIKES NATION! We had exceptional March conditions throughout the day. Light cover up until about Mossy Falls, even in this area it only seemed like we where sinking in 2-4 inches on boney stuff. From there the snow depths increased but snowshoes in this extremely seldom visited area this time of years would have been too clunky. We found moderate danger in the area near the Subway when there presented several areas that would be ripe for an injury or becoming coyote food in the spring when you fall into a crevasse. Speaking of wildlife, there is a lot of bear activity from the STOP! sign to around Subway. Guessing he has a den in those rocks, he was mowing down mountain ash berries. Pretty high up for a bear. Benefited from the inversion going on, as soon as we topped out onto Airline it was like stepping into a wind machine. "Oh Christmas Tree, oh Christmas tree, please hold me or im history" was sung many times on the ascent of Chemin des Dames. We wanted to continue on and grab Star Lake as well, but with winds out of the South, shifting SE, not a good combo. Our decision was confirmed by Gridder #71's significant other whom had their own accomplishment on the day, stating they where 220 and getting blown around up there. On principal, we did not wear spikes on the way out, they made great wind chimes. BK forgot his, so in solidarity, we did not wear them. All traction carried by us took rides. A good day for sure. Supper at Pemi Pub to replace all calories burned.
