Lincoln Woods was an ice rink. Flat enough to be ok bare booting, but a couple slip and slides. I continued bare booting until the first major crossing, but rock spikes would have been appropriate too. Black Pond and the bushwhack were in ok shape, some muddy spots and some frozen slush, with the usual difficulty finding the start of the bushwhack [???]. The crossings were surprisingly okay, but will be dangerous until water levels go down after this storm. Brutus was well broken out — there were just a couple tracks towards the slide, but from the top of the slide it didn’t seem anyone had gone up it. Brutus was a mix of crunchy snow/ice and bare earth/leaves/rocks. I had my sharp spikes on for this and was happy to have them in a few spots. There was more snow/ice higher up in a quasi-monorail, and transitioning to well-packed snow on the ridge. I recommend good sharp spikes or crampons for the descent. We made it to the car before the rain started! Apparently everyone had the same idea because it was a busy day on the Owl. |
