4am start from Appalachia TH. Valley Way was packed down and I barebooted up to the hut. I put on spikes, summited Madison on a packed trail, and then headed up Star Lake trail to avoid the 50+ MPH wind. I should have stuck with Airline - Star Lake didn't appear to have been touched since the last storm and required wayfinding and some exposure; the steep climb was coated in ice that was too thick for my spikes to have solid purchase and I did slide 10' at one point before arresting my fall. After summiting Adams and dropping down from the rocks, I needed my snowshoes to stay on top of the snow - the snow was thigh-deep on the flats without them. I needed my snowshoes fairly constantly until the Jewell trail intersection. I did put them back on to go around Monroe on Crawford Path, since no one else had traveled that way. After Monroe, it was spikes the rest of the way to Crawford Notch. |
