Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking was as advertised in the guidebook. I believe that last 0.5mi on dirt was narrow and maybe a bit rough. It could have significant water damage now but there’s also a house along it so presumably would get fixed pretty quick. Room for maybe a half dozen cars before it would begin to overflow. I don’t think there’s a place to park further down the road before it goes to gravel either. One other car there when we arrived at 8:30am and three others when I returned at 1:15pm (after hiking Beauty Ledge as well).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Ice - Black, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I don’t think there are any though I’m sure the trails are all water crossings now, lol.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Burrows Farm Trail may have occasionally been blazed in yellow but not sure if it was anything much as it’s a road. Moose Mtns Trail I don’t believe was blazed. Phoebes Nable Loop and Phoebes Nable Mtn trails were both well blazed in blue. I don’t recall any blowdowns; maybe some insignificant stepovers. I imagine there’s some significant water damage/washout now to both the trail and road
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure. Just maybe be careful with the ice currently on Moose Mtns Trail.

Comments
Comments: First hike of the day with mom. Afterward I redlined the Beauty Ledge loop as well. We hiked the loop counterclockwise as described in the guidebook.

We also hiked the Moose Mtn’s Trail spur that’s 0.8mi each way with 600-700ft of gain. Some steep and very eroded parts even though it’s a road. This trail, which is described as a spur in the guidebook, does not have a clear end so maybe watch your gps mileage if you use one if you’re redlining. The spur ends at a sort of unsigned T-jct where there’s a herd path to your right and left. To the left are the ledges which the guidebook describes. So walk a few feet out onto those perhaps and then call it quits as far as redlining goes. Note that the path to the left is blazed with pink paint on the ledges and black arrows with a blue background on trees and such. The path renters the woods and soon there’s what almost looks like caution tape from a distance blocking the path ahead and alerting you to a sharp left hand turn in the trail. I didn’t follow it much beyond this, soon bushwhacking a very short ways back to the ledge (much shorter than following the path back). My mother and I then hiked a very short distance along the path to the right at the T-jct to see if there was a view. There didn’t seem to be one so we quickly turned around. There was also some tricky ice on rock along the trail/spur. We didn’t use spikes as it was (usually) avoidable though with some care. I’m sure it’s all gone by now with the rain.

Back at the start of the spur, we continued to Phoebes Nable. This part of the hike was pretty tame. I enjoyed the open fields, old farm site, and graveyards. On the far side of the field, the trail quickly enters the woods and climbs at a moderate grade to the summit. Pretty open and nice view from the summit but no large mountains are visible from the summit though I believe we could see both Bauneg Beg Mtn and Mt Agamenticus in Maine! We were in the sun as well and remained there, rather warm for quite awhile. Just a fleece and a hat. I got by without gloves! A Christmas miracle for me, indeed! The hike down the east side of the mountain may have been steeper but not too bad. Watch out for a left hand turn off the road and onto a footpath.

Gaia had us at 4.5mi, 1200ft of gain.
