After having abandoned my attempt to get up North Kinsman from the Basin (described in an earlier report here), I noodled around a bit and then decided to persevere, heading up Lonesome Lake Trail. It was getting a bit late and so, on the shortest day of the year, I set myself a 2pm hard turn-around time to get to the top. A few groups were coming down as I ascended up to Lonesome Lake, mostly youth escorted by a couple of chaperones, and just a very few hardy souls up above the hut. It was quite cold, but the trail was firm but icy in spots; micro-spikes necessary for most of the day. Snowshoes would be useless, but there were a couple of steep icy sections that made me a bit nervous, especially descending - might have been worthwhile carrying an ice-ax. The view from the top of North Kinsman was spectacular, on a bright, cloudless day. Reached there about 1pm, so easily met my deadline, even having gotten a late-ish start. |
