Bare-booted up until just below Jacob’s Ladder. No major issues before then. Early in the morning, the ground was still mostly frozen so the gravel was hard and not loose. Put Hillsound spikes on just below Jacob’s Ladder. One person in our party was comfortable with the stretch of Jacob’s Ladder, the other was not.
Left spikes on until slightly below Jacob’s Ladder for the traction. Jacob’s Ladder is starting to fill in with snow. I don’t think crampons would be overkill for that section. There’s enough snow building up on the sloping part of Jacob’s Ladder to cause issues if you slipped. There’s very little snowpack above this point and lots of exposed rock.
Saw about 8-10 other people out enjoying the first day of winter! Slightly breezy day at the summit, but overall descent conditionals this time of year. |
