|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction, Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Most of the rocks on the Valley Way crossings were covered with ice. There was enough bare rock to cross, gingerly, with bare boots; spikes make it easy. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Scar Trail has three trees across it within the upper 0.1 miles. They are all duck-unders. Two are 12" in diameter, the 3rd is 6" diameter. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
The Scar Loop Trail would only be appropriate for dogs if the owner is willing and able to lift them to chest height or higher, all while standing on a narrow and steep ledge. |

| Comments: |
Other posters have noted the impossibility of having the "right" footware, so I won't belabor the point. I will say that some of the ice flows are very hard ice, and you will want your sharpest traction. I switched between bare boots and spikes three times. Snowshoes would have been useless. The easiest walking was on Scar Trail. This nice little trail has very few rocks and there was very little ice.
Descending Adams I made a little detour to JQ Adams for the Trailwright 72 list. From the height of Adams I could find lanes of snow leading to the summit and this made the short climb easy. Nice views of Madison and Adams from this slightly different vantage point. |
