Trails: East Pond Trail, East Pond Loop, Little East Pond Trail, Forest Discovery Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, December 25, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: East Pond Trailhead on the Kanc side is historically not plowed (south end on Tripoli Road is definitely not plowed) but not an issue today. It was icy, in fact probably the most treacherous footing of the entire hike. Forest Discovery Trailhead is usually plowed and, incidentally, has a really nice restroom.

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I flicked/threw a bunch of branches & small trees off all trails. All blowdowns except for one or two on East Pond Loop are small enough to be easily removed with a handsaw, but there really weren’t that many given the recent winds. Forest Discovery Trail is not “accessible” currently. Going clockwise, there’s a lot of erosion and trail washout before and after the so-called “wildlife-viewing opening,” sometimes knee deep. :(

Comments
Comments: The weather was gloomy & dreary & drizzly this morning, but these trails were really quite lovely. After the drizzle abated around 8 am, I started on the Kanc side and did the lollipop loop visiting both East Pond and Little East Pond. I barebooted 100%. There was some ice here and there, especially from the Kanc to the height of land, but all of it was easy to negotiate without getting off trail. East Pond Loop was magical, almost a little fairy forest, very enjoyable. I don’t believe these ponds seem many winter visitors, but admittedly, it wasn’t very winter like today

I hit up the Forest Discovery Trail afterwards, a pleasant graded stroll. Unfortunately, the trail is not handicap accessible at the moment due to a pretty massive washout early on.
