Short version: Wait until January to do these trails.
Lower Stinson Mountain Trail had lots of areas of breakable crust ice remaining from the runoff going straight down portions of the trail. Lots of rock hopping.
Starting around the ledge turn with the log, there are quite a few stretches of blue ice flows. The ice was soft enough for Microspikes today, but I don't know that I'd trust them when temperatures drop in a few days; musical Hillsound terrain at that point.
I descended snowmobile trail to avoid the ice flows, but it was unpleasant with lots of collapsing ground frost, some stretches of ice monorail, and at least one stretch of wall to wall blue ice flow.
Apart from the awful trail conditions, the one nice thing was that there was a beautiful undercast from the summit with the Ossipees, etc. sticking out like islands.
Cloudy morning (below the undercast) with temperatures in the 40s. |
