Elevation spread throughout hike with moderate and steady climbs broken up by low elevation switchbacks. With trees bare, you could see views of the Squam lakes on the way up. There is a nice outlook about halfway and even better views at the summit. Wind increased while temps fell into the low 40's as we approached the summit.
Hike started in dense fog which mostly disabled as the sun came out and temps rose to 50 degrees. Undercast clouds that stayed over the lakes most of the day while exposing nearby mountain tops. Great view of Mt Moosilauke, which was covered by clouds most of the time.
Slippery mud and wet leaves were more of a challenge than the ice (which you could walk around).
There is a box for donations at the trailhead. |
