| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Access to Mt. Garfield Trail is closed, so you have to park off of route 3. The walk to the trailhead is a nice warm up, and nearly entirely flat. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Ice bridges not formed, and looked unstable. Decided to find another way around, and found that both stream crossings are avoidable. Coming up the Mt. Garfield Trail, when you hit the first stream crossing, follow the herd path to the left of the trail. Eventually you will hit FR117, which is a snow-mobileing road. Follow this road to the right until you cross both bridges. After crossing the second bridge, follow the herd path to the left until you run into Mt. Garfield Trail again. |

Mount Garfield Trail, Gale River Loop Road, FR117
Beautiful hike! Conditions were nearly perfect yesterday. Got a little blue sky and warm weather all around. Views from the summit are unbelievable.
We spent the way up trying to avoid putting on our spikes and damage them against the rocks, and ended up nearly slipping a few times. I would strongly recommend putting on your spikes sooner than you think you have to, and saving yourself some slips. |
