What was originally forecasted to be a great day suffered with fog and clouds that stuck on the High peaks to the north.
Started off at the Cog station and made the steady climb to Waumbek. Did see a Cog train headed up which I wasn't sure they'd be running but Hot cocoa and smores at Waumbek is a nice treat for visitors! Strapped on the micro spikes just before I Got into the clouds at about 5000 feet. Visibility dropped and winds picked up. Got up on the tracks not long after the intersection with CP. Couple spots I almost got blown off..whoa! Hid behind Sherman Adams then popped out into the consistent 40MPH winds to grab the summit and a couple pics. Got snuck up on by another climber as I was taking a selfie! He had on crampons and an ice axe and had come up the Ammo and up the brook and ice flows. We hung on the summit for like 5 minutes in the wind. On to Jefferson for him and I made my way back down the Cog. Got below the clouds and it was like a September day! Warmth had created some real soft spots on the access road down low. Coming down and looking off in the distance all the 4K peaks, including southern Presis were out in the sun. |
