| Water Crossing Notes: |
Clearly a day makes a difference with these temps. 1st crossing no issues. 2nd crossing… ugh!!! There is ice cakes on the rocks with high waters. Went up stream and finally gave up on a line that the ice I was standing on let loose thankfully to a rock underneath and then I had to step on a rock submerged about 3” underwater with my right foot.. so got that wet on the way up. |

Ok what a suckfest. I went and got a poncho since I forgot my packcover and left that on until the summit (until I shredded it and it went into my pack). Lincoln woods is wet, with some frozen mud and some 2 noticeable wash outs from the recent storm. Hit black pond and still wet I know shocker for a day it was suppose to rain on. I hit the bushwhack with no issues, and got a patch here or there or ice but nothing to write home about. Once I hit lincoln brook trail… ugh bare Trail, wet trail, ice for short bursts on trail. Hit the two crossings which I put my spikes on for the second (read above for crossing info). I wanted to keep my spikes on but immediately regretted that and too them off going up brutus. Wet still with some ice but nothing too bad still. I hit owls head slide and I could have put my spikes on here again but it was so back and forth with ice to just rocks. Very very annoying. Once I slipped enough I put them on for a few minutes later to be walking on rock again. 3700’ and above stays ice or snow. Saw only Andrew and Phillip on owls head which heard the 2nd crossing did a number on them as well (I had seen 1 of them crossing then I was looking but didn’t pay attention to wet feet by them). It is soft snow on top and ice. Hit the summit then turn around and my spikes and gaitors almost killed me a few times. Kept the spikes on knowing the 2nd crossing I will need it still. I picked a different line (the one I used in Novmeber) and picked sadly 3 rocks under water. So 2 right feet in and 1 left foot in. My boots did well not feeling the cold or the wetness really. Took the spikes off and headed out. Saw a couple at black pond and a few on lincoln woods. Got back to the parking lot and immediately changed out of the wet cloths thankfully! At least that is now down for December…. See ya Owls in January! |
