Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Driving past the town maintained road is not a good idea. The hard rains before Christmas took a toll on the road. The class 6 end section is badly eroded with just thing ribbons of the road left and deep washouts. Smart people did not try to drive the steep class 6 section.

Comments
Comments: I was looking for a short one this morning and Iron Mountain popped into my head. The drive up Green Hill Road is fine but turning into Iron Mountain Road things got dicey. Rough repairs have been made and most cars can make it to the beginning of the class 6 section. Smart idea to park here and since there are no snowbanks there is plenty of room to park. Nice trailhead sign with mileages. Views from Hayes Farm field were limited because of low clouds, no big Mt. Washington view today, boo hoo. Still such a pretty area. After crossing the field the wet muddy area has not frozen yet and there is a herd path most of the way around it with some rock hopping. Not much snow, maybe a fluffy inch and many places it has melted, actually the field had the most snow. The new route of the trail makes the trail longer at 1.3 miles but it is much nicer with the switchbacks and feels shorter/less effort. I wore my shoulder season hiking boots, they have studs in the soles, spikes would have been overkill today but nice having that extra grip. Just up to the old fire tower ruins and the summit just behind it and then back down. Nice quick trip. I've been here a few times but first time in winter, so didn't visit the ledges or the mines this time around. See ya next year.
