Bare booted all the way to the summit spur today. We took both ‘shwacks and they were wet, as expected. We followed the footsteps of a few people on Engine Hill and that was a mistake. The beginning was correct, but then they swung too far left and dropped down into a very wet area. We slogged through it following their tracks, but set a much higher route on the way back that followed one of our good gps tracks. The snow on Engine Hill varied from a dusting to two feet. Snow shoes would have been nice in a few very short sections, but are definitely not needed. ISO Express appeared less travelled and we saw evidence of two prior tracks. We might have been off a little bit (I definitely was) before hitting the view rock, but all the tracks eventually came together. Yesterday’s snow made for a grippy layer atop any ice, so the summit spur was the best that I’ve seen. I donned my extremely dull rock spikes to climb the summit spur and kept them on until pretty close to the car mostly due to laziness. |
