Bluebird day with clear views, actual sun mid-day, no wind, temps in the high 20’s to 32, a few inches of new loose packed snow that micro spikes made handy work of. Put the spikes on right from the start and it made the whole trip easier. Only downside is a fair amount of not quite frozen mud and running water the lower mile of all trails requiring you to navigate more than usual.
Did the loop counterclockwise to get the elevation out of the way quickly. Went up the ski trail to the intersection. Took the old path up to the col (3-way intersection) between the 2 summits (it was beautiful with the new snow on all the branches and not that hard to do). Proceeded .3 miles to South Double head and the extra lookouts .2 miles beyond. Stunning views, 3 great look outs (2 marked with 3’ cairns).
Returned to the 3-way intersection, up .3 miles/200’ to North Doublehead and the cabin, One viewpoint there in back of the cabin. Took the ski trail all the way back to the parking lot, it was actually more challenging and monotonous. Glad we went the way we did. |
