Comments: Deer Leap Conservation Area (Windham)

Interesting area with loop trail. I eventually figured out the trails connected as a loop. There were one or two large arrows on trees and that was it for trail marking. The actual "Deer Leap" is a dramatic 60' cliff above a (now) drained pond. My understanding is that the dam needed repair and the ownership was under dispute. Hence, there are only a few streams flowing through what was once a dramatic area. Still, there are nice open mostly oak woods as well as many granite outcroppings. Great area for trail-running. The INTERESTING part of the area is the actual dam area to the left of Deer Leap as you're looking out at the drained pond. Walking around that area was pretty exciting because the dam was apparently built on a former mill-site. The stonework is AMAZING. But, the REALLY exciting part was looking into the spillways and seeing several HUGE millstones (one pair stacked still!!!!) in the water - how cool is that????
