Started up the Mine road following a few switchbacks, in order to check out mines. Trails were icy, wet, with trace amount of snow and had numerous blowdowns (as expected for un-maintained trails). Followed skidder road to the end before entering woods. Encountered some tight areas, open forest, and stretches that were quite wet due to recent rains (had to hop on tussocks to avoid getting wet feet). Headed to COL the west of the summit in search of the logged area. Followed the old logging road through lots of small prickly growth and over downed trees to the summit. Could not find register after 30 min searching (could be under the 3-4 inches of snow or blowdowns), and taking in the fantastic views through bare trees.
Returned along the ridge initially through the logged area, then over several of the Gardner peaks in open woods. Was tempted to bag the middle peak (oh so close), but ran out of time.... Descended the forest west of the mined area looking for more open woods. Located a skidder road that paralleled a stream to the lower elevations where we jumped back to the mine trails and back to car. In general, there were many wet areas to get around everywhere in the woods, which may not be typical, especially for this point in the season. |
