Walked along the snowless East side trail for about 2 miles. Jumped into open woods with slight dusting of snow near the kiosk and first camp site. Woods remained open until the last 5-6oo feet near the summit. At that point the spruce woods started to tighten up with occasional more open sections (relatively). Snow amounts gradually increased to only 4-5 inches of fluff, but much of it landed on our heads and packs as we pushed through the spruce. Finally emerged at Helicopter pad and solar panel. Proceeded north to the summit to search for the register in the more open woods. Much faster descent through the thick stuff was made by following our foot prints in the snow, one good aspect of winter hiking. |
