Date of Hike: Saturday, January 6, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: If you have a monster truck with very high clearance, you might make it to Breezy Point, but it’s pretty severely washed out, with deep gullies, broken asphalt, and at least 3 ice sheets covering the road. Parking is limited below. I pulled off on the side just at the start of the severely eroded section. For Tunnel Brook Trail you can drive in from 112 only 0.4 mile, where there is space for a few vehicles.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The only tricky ones were the southernmost 4 crossings of Slide Brook and feeders on Tunnel Brook Trail. I used spikes to cross on icy rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Only 4 or 5 blowdowns on Tunnel Brook Trail, easy to go over, under or around. Hurricane actually looked pretty good. Lower Carriage Road had long ice flows (or is it floes?).

Comments
Comments: Point to point hike thanks to a car spot by Cayenne Pfeffer and his human. :)

Easy road walk, then easy trail through the Moosilauke-Clough Tunnel. Beautiful walk with lots of critter tracks. I followed a coyote track for miles.

Hurricane Trail was lovelier than I’d remembered, especially at the height of land and the little view spur, where there were fresh bear tracks at 3000 ft. I mostly barebooted to this point but wore spikes descending from the HOL because it was hard to discern where the ice lurked underneath a dusting to an inch of snow.

Carriage Road - I did just the lower two miles - was the iciest trail of the day. Spikes on and off.

Nice hike of about 14 miles/2600 ft. of climb and encountered only one other hiker, on a Saturday. Yay.
