| Comments: |
We started from Zealand winter trailhead by 6:15am; it snowed all day long accompanied by strong winds. There was 2-3" snow on the road and Zealand trail. We paused at the hut for water, and then climbed up to Zealand. There was some ice under the snow, but overall, it was smooth going. Zealand to the Guyot intersection was 3-4" of snow with the holes between rocks not yet filled in. We paused in the trees by the Guyot intersection to suit up. The wind hit ~40 MPH and the temperatures were around -15 windchill. We struggled through some thigh-deep snow drifts before getting below treeline again. The trail up to Bond and West Bond had a few knee-deep drifts but overall, had 4" of fresh snow. The descent of Bond and the climb over to Bondcliff was very windy and the trail vacillated between firm frozen snow and knee-deep drifts. The small drop after Bondcliff was quite manageable and from there, the trail was smooth - 2-4" powder on top of frozen snow. |
