Comments
Comments: Nice day for this hike. On the warmer side for winter except for the cold morning start. The was no wind except for a bearable breeze at the top of Ossey. Some of us used the trifecta of footwear today. We started in on the ski trail with snowshoes breaking trail on about 6"- 8" of virgin fluffy snow. We kept the snowshoes on until the bottom of the first steep then switched to spikes after the clicking and clacking got louder, and the snow depth lessened to around 3 "- 6". The snow-covered rocks started to become more prevalent. Two hikers ahead of us continued with snowshoes. We wore spikes for the ascent and all the way to Osceola. The steep was manageable but had challenges with occasional backsliding and picking the right foot placement not always know what was under the snow. I had only one unintentional sit down on the uphill. There was a little more snow at elevation. The chimney was easily manageable via the bypass. We switched to crampons for the descent of Osceola until the trail junction sign. It was mentioned that with crampons, we could trip on the rocks or slip on the ice. I did trip on a rock into an epic face plant on a level part of the trail complete with a cartoon worthy full face of snow. We spiked out from the sign to the parking lot, then bare booted the road to the roadside pull off. All this changes with the coming snow.
