Two young lads ahead of me who I saw when they were coming down. One had snowshoes and one bareboot which created a lot of postholes. Unfortunately they both barebooted down so the trail wasn’t as packed as I was hoping for on the descent. It appeared the lads had broken the trail out to a degree going up, however it was still largely “unbroken.” There was a couple inches of frozen, crusty snow on top of very deep powder for most of the trail. As a result, there was some postholing even with snowshoes. I found the ledges VERY challenging to ascend because of the soft deep snow. There was nothing for my snowshoes to grab, and I slid back down multiple times when trying to go up. Eventually made it but this section of trail slowed me down considerably because of all the attempts it took to ascend each steep ledge. Coming down I could not prevent butt sliding- just too steep and soft on the ledges. As challenging as it was to break trail to a degree and negotiate the ledges, it was still a beautiful day in the mountains! |
