This entire hike was in challenging shape yesterday.
-Old Bridal Path - someone recently had a big day post holing. It's a mess up to the hut. Alternated between spikes and snowshoes without much success.
-Franconia Ridge (Lafayette -> Haystack) - Wind blown conditions mean a combination of exposed rock, ice, crusty snow and drifts. Despite high winds and little visibility, this was the fastest part of the day.
-Franconia Ridge (Haystack->Liberty Springs trail) - Deep drifts covered by crusty snow. Snowshoes are a must, but even then I routinely sank 6-12" with each step. Beautiful section but tough. Watch out for mini spruce traps. Spent 10 mins digging my leg and a snow shoe out of one.
-Liberty->Flume - The most hiked section with a combination of post holes and snow shoe marks. Was getting very choppy towards the end.
-Osseo - Probably in the best condition thanks to a couple of ladies that broke it out yesterday. Between those two and my heavy feet it is probably getting close to packed right now.
-Lincoln Woods - I've never been so happy to get on Lincoln Woods. It's mostly packed, but you'll have to watch out for frozen ankle biters.
A beautiful hike overall, but a very challenging one in current conditions. |
