Comments
Comments: Could hardly pick a better day to be up at elevation. Franconia Notch was socked in fog the first hour or so, but cleared just as we were having chili at the tram's summit lodge. Gorgeous sites. This loop is far more interesting than the world-famous loop across the notch!

We wore spikes all the way up though we probably should have switched to snowshoes at about 3800-3900 feet. Snow is deeper up there and we saw regular, though shallower postholes. We did wear snowshoes down, though, to help try and start carving of a track and prevent more deeper postholes, which we did note on the Kinsman Ridge and Lonesome Lake trails. Snow was crusty but did give pretty well. These trails haven't seen any snowshoe use since the snows of a week ago.

Rain on Saturday 13 January, followed by an extended period of frigid cold, is gonna freeze up whatever surface there is out there -- and this includes postholes. So, be careful if not using snowshoes, especially once more snow falls on top of these surfaces!
