Upon reading the Friday 1/12 post here (Thank you Izzy!) saying we needed snowshoes, we packed both spikes and ‘shoes. However after barebooting through the three overpass tunnels and finding minimal snow cover over a hard pack, we opted for spikes for the rest of the day which worked fine. Saw only one gentleman on snowshoes, most others on spikes although maybe 6 to 8 were barebooters, including one pair of hikers who were really struggling on descent. Just one person appeared to have ascended from the lower parking lot on the Indian head Trail. A little cloudy at the summit, and the former viewpoint around the corner from the ledges, and overlooking Franconia Ridge is almost totally closed in with overgrown trees, But who cares-it’s still a worthy view and a great, gradual march among the whites that soothe and heal. |
