Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, January 15, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Western Carr Mtn. Trailhead is just a pull off on a narrow dirt road. Good directions in White Mtn. Guide. Parked as close to the snowbank as I could. Three Ponds Trailhead is plowed and has room for several cars.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing of Sucker Brook was mostly frozen over, with maybe an 18” step over open water. The water crossing on Waternomee Falls Spur, at the first small waterfall, was mostly frozen over as well.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: This area didn’t seem to get hit as hard by the recent wind events. Only a couple of blowdowns here and there and very few branches in the trail. Potentially tricky route finding through the recent logged section, western end of Carr Mtn. Trail. Glad I went east to west. Saw two whole blazes once I left the summit.

Comments
Comments: This was a beautiful hike.

The 0.5 mile of Three Ponds Trail was well traveled; it’s a snowmobile trail. Carr Mtn. Trail to the summit had seen some snowshoe traffic, but it was far from a spikeable superhighway. From the summit down to the western TH, there had been no prior traffic evident save for some old postholes in the lower mile. The snowshoeing was easy and fun with a couple of inches of fluff over a consolidated base. I floated on top 95% of the time.

Waternomee Falls went into a sort of icy cistern. That’s the best description I can come up with. Wouldn’t want to fall into it.

Saw so many fresh animal tracks today: bear, moose, coyote, bobcat, squirrel and vole. :)

Thanks to J&C for the car spot! Much appreciated.
