Late start due to dentist appt in AM with the goal to get to the top of ski area just as they shut down. Bare boots on 19 Mile Brook Trail to the junction with Carter Dome Trail...nice Styrofoam snow. Only ice on the trails I saw all day was on the ski trails. Snowshoes went on at the Carter Dome trail junction for the rest of the way. Wildcat Ridge Trail up from Carter notch and all the way to the ski area had only 2 sets of bareboot tracks. The snow is light and not packed, so the postholes were not terrible to navigate, but I have to admire the tenacity of the 'holers...with each step they didn't know if they were going to sink to their shins or their crotches, it must have been miserable. Should you wish to avoid this, you 100% want snowshoes for the entirety of the WRT. Got to the platform at 4:20 just as sun was setting (mission accomplished!), not a breath of wind made for a pretty amazing show. Apparently not supposed to hike down during lift operations, so the timing ended up being spot on. |
