Winter is finally here! Rocks are all buried at last. We had planned on going up Fire Warden’s, but Seven Dwarfs hadn’t been plowed out yet at 9 am (nor had Beaver Brook or the winter lot on 302). We were able to enter the winter lot and snag a spot where someone had been parked during most of yesterday’s snow so it was reasonably clear. Snowshoes went on in the parking lot as there was 8+” of unpacked powder. They stayed on all day and are definitely still needed. The two of us broke trail on Zealand Road and up Hale Brook. Snow depth got a little higher as we gained elevation, but nothing crazy (over a foot, but less than 18 inches up high). Once back at Zealand Road, we were happy to see that someone had come out from the hut wearing snowshoes. At the “wildlife view” we picked up another snowshoer or two. The track was getting nicely packed. At the Sugarloaf lot, we ran into two barebooters with a dog out for a walk. They did some damage, but it was minimal. Snowshoes are definitely still needed particularly on Hale Brook which is very unconsolidated and Zealand Road past Hale Brook which only had seen one snowshoer. |
