Comments
Comments: From vehicle, snowshoed up unplowed New Colony Rd 0.5 mi to Orange Cove Trail that was groomed and snowmobiled. Followed snowmo trail past the HOL and down the N side to approx 1850’. Started bw here, up the drainage to 2050’. Then turned NE to the summit of North Peak and the register. Returned in our tracks back to snowmo trail.
Followed snomo trail back to HOL where we bw up the drainage for a while and then turned NW to Catalouchee summit and register. Tree with yellow X is nearby.
Bw conditions:
Breaking effort - To-die-for surface conditions!!! Zero to minimal effort in 1 to 3” fluffy powder on boilerplate that was occasionally icy. After taking a few tumbles we avoided any slabbing due to icy conditions
Grades - mostly easy, some moderate, very little steep.
Tree density - all wide open hardwoods. Except for very narrow areas around both summits which are guarded by tight spruce/fir. Could be a bit of an effort to travel through these trees should the boughs be heavily laden with snow.
