Met the only other gridiot going for Carrigain in the parking lot and we decided there was strength in numbers so headed up together. Road is finally groomed and in great shape. The last report of anyone hiking Carrigain is from this past Sunday and I'd believe it if that were the last time. Trail was a slight groove, but easy to follow. Broke out the whole thing. Drifts didn't start until the uphill portion. Trail was the deepest after signal Ridge. Gorgeous day, but the wind and temps made sticking around impossible. Passed one guy on the way up (maybe 2/3 the way up the looooong straight section before the switchbacks) who had no pack on, but we found that hanging another couple tenths of a mile below that. After this week, not a thing I would try, but to each their own. Passed a skier coming in on the flats as well. Never seen one out that way. VERY fresh bear tracks coming up the side of the mountain on that long straight stretch, following the trail about 10' then veering left back into the woods! Not tracks I've ever seen in winter! |
