We were the first ones in the parking lot this morning and we could see the lovely track laid by Brian on Thursday and Genevieve on Friday. As we rounded the corner, the wind had totally drifted it in. We rebroke that and alternated steps to pack it down. Once we got up to the Engine Hill BW, the track was clearer with just an inch or two of powder in the track. Smooth sailing up Iso Express as well. More drifting at the top of that and on Davis Path. On the descent we encountered 2 groups also in snowshoes and the trail was gorgeous. Packed and smooth and fast and we cruised along. That pace came to an abrupt halt when we encountered a guy in boots. He apologized for "destroying the trail." Engine Hill is beyond repair without another big snowstorm. There are multiple areas where he postholed with one foot, then tried to pull that foot out and sunk again and again. We picked our way around this carnage but there was nothing we could do to fix it. On Rocky Branch trail there were postholes 12 inches deep. Scott tripped multiple times and another hiker said he fell due to the holes. Why this guy didn't turn around when he first started postholing is beyond me. Many kittens died today. |
