Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The water crossing on Jewel link is bridged and supported my snowshoes. I wouldn't try to bare boot it though as a posthole here could be pretty cold and wet
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There was a few trees down on Jewel trail. The first was a walk thru(a tree fell right in the middle of the trail and is now frozen in with just the branches sticking out) two walk overs, one walk under, and one walk around. None of them are thicker than 6"

Lost and Found: I found a Nalgene bottle with some stickers on it on Jewel trail. I left it at the Ammo lot by the sign

Comments
Comments: What a great day to grid out January on Jefferson up the Jewel! For the first time in awhile I got to the trail and it was nicely groomed out with snowshoes, instead of the postholed nightmares I've been dealing with on the last few hikes. There is a nice snowshoe track beginning right at the cog all the way up to treeline, but it was still VERY soft and not anywhere near ready for spikes yet. There's still alot of light, fluffy snow that's drifting around and filling in the track in places. So it was snowshoes all day today. Above the treeline up to Sphinx col it was a mix of deep drifts, hard packed snow, and even bare rocks, so if you're headed up I'd recommend bringing the beater snowshoes. Navigating and trying to find the carins was difficult, and most tracks were drifted in. Sometimes I just had to head in a upward direction till I got to Gulfslide. Once on Gulfslide the drifts calmed down a bit, but there was still some to deal with so I kept the snowshoes on. From Sphinx col I probably could have switched to spikes as the snow was a hard pack and rocks were showing, but with the 40-60 mph winds it was just easier to keep the snowshoes on up to the summit of Jefferson. Just like on Jewel above treeline the carins on Jefferson loop were hard to find, so again I just pointed my feet up and made my way to the summit.
On the hike back across Gulfslide the winds really started to pickup and I was stumbling about like I had one too many drinks at the bar. I was the only person out there today, and luckily the 90 mph gusts that were predicted didn't come to fruition, Yay!
