Went up at 6:00am by headlamp to see a sunrise and hung out on the summit in the clouds after an enjoyable hike up.
Trail was very nicely packed snow. You can use snowshoes all the way to the Avalon summit without any issues due to the depth of the packed snow. I just toe kicked my way up in my mountaineering boots because I was convinced I'd have to take my snowshoes off at some point on the steep rock pitches but it would have been fine and the elevators would have made it nicer. I used microspikes on my way down for a little grip. Cramp-ons are not needed. If you wander a few inches off the 18-inch wide packed trail you flop into knee-deep powder as is evidenced by many post holes just off the sides. :-) |
