Hiked into JR cabin for a few days of R / R.. Ravine road was plowed but slightly icy. I bare booted it. My wife wore micros. Personal choice. The snow pack on Al Merrill was solid. You could wear either snowshoes or micros but the snowpack was solid enough not to posthole. We hiked up Al Merrill to the first sign ( after the cabin woodshed ) and instead of going left, we went right. This is an abandoned and unmaintained trail. There use to be a sign that said "dead end" but that has been removed. Needless to say it was not broken out. Loose powder and small spruce traps were the norm. So, snowshoes the whole way. Some parts of this trail are overgrown but other parts are wide open and easy hiking. The end of the dead end trail has an old radio or comm tower. This is Sayre Peak. It's a weird thing to all of a sudden see this tower in the middle of nowhere. There is usually a lot of moose sign around there but seems Bullwinkle has taken up residence elsewhere. No real views from Sayre Peak but its a fun time out in the woods on a rarely traveled trail. |
