In the clouds on Carrigain today! It snowed all morning but was clearer with a little sun later in the day in the valley. It was weirdly warm and completely still when I went across Signal Ridge, and I caught one quick view across the notch. Trail conditions were very mixed. In my opinion, this trail very much still needs snowshoes, especially with the warm temperatures this weekend. I barebooted to the trailhead and then wore the ‘shoes the rest of the day. While there is a packed trench, it is not consistent and definitely not all the way frozen, and can give way randomly. The trail is now unfortunately covered in postholes from some trail runners today, as well as hikers in spikes. A number of groups with snowshoes helped to solidify a nice path but many of the postholes were too deep to cover up. I hyperextended my knee in one, but didn’t seem to do any lasting damage. Conditions were better higher up where the snow had a firm crust, although this may have changed this afternoon since I was there. |
