Pretty basic winter Owl's Head, with the route fully broken out, but a soft snow top layer due to the temps and recent light accumulation. I barebooted Lincoln Woods Tr to the Black Pond junction, then put on snowshoes out/back to the summit, as the trail immediately became much softer. Herd paths are routed nicely with no braiding. Water crossings were fine but another hiker did put a snowshoe through accidentally ... this should fix up as the temps get back to seasonal in the coming days. Met/passed four other hikers sending the Owl today, all in snowshoes. My lowest air temp for the day was 29 deg F at the OH summit around 1pm, there was plenty of mist and humidity around under 5k it seemed. Definitely got a little spring feel with minor snow balling on the snowshoes, and snow melt dripping off the trees. Now.. back to winter! |
