Trail to Diana's Baths is wonderfully packed down and only needs spikes, but don't let this fool you! Once I got to the Red Ridge Trail, the snowshoes went on, and I had a fun time trying to not die in the holes made by barebooters on some other day. You definitely need snowshoes for this trail right now - even with them, I was sometimes going up to my knees in snow. The barebooters seemed to have turned around and headed back down about 0.6 miles from the junction of the Red Ridge Trail with the Moat Mountain Trail. The trail after this was a bit difficult to follow in spots - definitely needed to stop and check for (small) cairns every so often.
Had been planning on going to South Moat as well but was going to run out of time (breaking trail is slow!), so turned right onto Moat Mountain Trail. Also seemed to be the first person on this trail since the last snow. On the way down, I had the interesting experience of following the tracks of a deer apparently being chased by some pawed/clawed animal.
TLDR: Snowshoes!! Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by the nice packed trail to Diana's Baths. |
