Started the day off reading 0 degrees F at the car. Temps at the summit in negative single possibly double digits, wind chills near -30F. Alone on the mountain all day. There was one set of snowshoers that had gone up before us, but they turned back about 1.25 miles before the summit and we broke the rest of the way. Snow was very light and dry, so not a lot of float, but not too much trouble to pull your feet out either. Beaver Brook was steep as always, but the lack of any ice made it a pretty easy climb with elevators and not too bad on the decent. The summit was pretty intense, near-zero visibility, clouds freezing to our clothes, but it was a very short time of exposure. Beaver Brook trail is well protected until a few hundred yards before the summit so it was easy to gear up, dive out and retreat. We used snowshoes the whole way until Beaver Brook became too steep for them on the descent where microspikes came in handy. Could have used spikes on the summit as well, but didn't want to switch for the 15 minutes we were out there. |
