I was the only hiker on the trail today. There were a couple of inches of snow under a frozen crust. The conditions actually made it easier to climb up the steeps by providing more snow to grip over any ice. In the last half mile to the peak, there were snow drifts up to 8 inches deep. No views of Franconia Ridge or the notch below, however I was surrounded by beautiful trees covered in snow. On the way down, having broken through the frozen crust, it was a bit trickier to establish a secure grip. At times, I stepped sideways down the steeps for better traction. So I would recommend snow shoes or crampons on the steeps. |
