Today's Plan A was to head to the Whites. But I-93 was craptastic with black ice and a slew of accidents from people who are incapable of slowing down. So I got off the highway and headed to the Belknap Range.
Old Stage Rd., the lower part of Blueberry Pasture Trail up to the logging road cutoff, Straightback Mtn. Trail, and the loop over North Avery Hill had been traveled by snowmobiles. Everywhere else I was breaking out 2-4 in. of new snow over an existing base with some deeper drifts. Snowshoes are essential in this area with the current conditions and I wore my trusty TSLs round-trip.
Not a big view day but the snow-draped trees are gorgeous right now, especially on the upper section of Straightback Mtn. Trail. I saw no other hikers and with no wind it was extremely quiet out there today. |
