I gridded out the month yesterday with a winter presidential traverse. It was an amazing day for it- sunny, no wind, and total undercast. We broke through the cloud layer at the madison hut and then spent most of the day above the clouds. Valley way was packed out well, but we still snowshoed the entire day. We broke trail through some drifts between franklin and eisenhower, but otherwise the snow was pretty supportive. I got good enough traction with my MSR snowshoes in the jefferson snowfield but it was still a little scary. The rocks were mostly buried. There were some low hanging branches between eisenhower and pierce, and some postholes on the way down pierce. We completed the traverse in a little more than 12.5 hours including 1.5 hour of breaks. We took airline to adams to avoid the steeper snowfields on starr lake, and used the cog railway to reach washington to avoid the dangerous spot on gulfside at the edge of the great gulf. |
